Settling for a bad relationship is not healthy. You know you’re in a bad relationship when:
– Your partner brings you down through words or disrespectful deeds.
– You feel you have to change yourself to be with him/her.
– Your partner is emotionally or financially or physically abusive.
– You sacrifice and give too much and they take too much.
Sacrificing too much is the warning sign we’ll focus on today.
No one said that relationships were easy and that there wasn’t a give-and-take that’s necessary to make them work. However, sacrificing too much of who you are and what you want out of life is an indication of a larger problem in the relationship.
It is a sign that your spouse fails to take your life goals and ambitions into consideration; a sign that what is important to you is just not that important to them; a sign that they don’t respect you, period.
In a healthy, committed relationship, both people make sacrifices for each other, not just because that’s what they’re supposed to do, but because they love and respect the person they married and wish to build a life together ensuring that life they build meets their own needs and the needs of their partner.
If you’re in a relationship where you are sacrificing too much and are unhappy about it, talk to a licensed therapeutic marriage and family counselor to work on turning things around before its too late.
If you’ve done all you can to fix the relationship, then having a free and confidential consultation with a family and divorce attorney may be the next step you need to evaluate your options going forward – you both deserve to be happy, if you’re not happy together perhaps dissolving the relationship is the only option left.
